This video tutorial offers instructions and examples of how to create personal stories to address specific behaviors that may negatively affect a person’s social interactions. This video is part of a professional development retreat held at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, West Africa. The Ghana Ministry of Education Division of Special Education’s “Unit Schools” are 2 to 3 classrooms for students with intellectual disabilities and autism within a general education school. There are currently 25 Unit Schools throughout Ghana with approximately 1,200 students. Lindsay Milgram, CCC-SLP, introduced these narrative stories, which are adapted from Carol Grey’s Social Stories, to 70 “Unit School” teachers of students with intellectual disabilities and autism and teachers of students in general education.

Social stories are designed for children with autism or intellectual disability that have behaviors that may interfere with them participating in the class, home and/or community. The stories help the identify the behavior, understand how the behavior affects the child as well as what they can do instead and how that will benefit them. They were developed for individuals with autism and/ or intellectual disability.

Jina langu ni Cate Crowley. Mimi ni profesa mashuhuri katika Walimu Chuo, Chuo Kikuu cha Columbia katika programu ya usemi na lugha.

Moja ya mambo ninayopenda kushiliki nanyi ni kuhusu kadi zinazoitwa AAC. Tumeona kwamba kadi hizi ni njia nzuri ya mawasiliano kwa wanafunzi wenye mahitaji maalum kutumia katika masoko ya kwao. Tulianza kufanya kazi pamoja na Belinda Bukari ambaye ni mwalimu mkuu katika Shule Effiduasi ya wanafunzi wenye autism na ulemavu wa akili.

Wakati sisi tulipoenda Ghana, tuliwauliza wazazi, “Mnataka watoto wenu waweze kufanya nini?” Wazazi akasema, “Twataka watoto wetu wawe na uwezo wa kwenda sokoni na kununua vitu kwa ajili ya familia zetu.” Walimu waliweza kudhibitisho kwa hii ni asili ya mtoto wa Ghana. Tuliamua kujaribu kufanya kadi za AAC za mawasiliano. Hizo kadi zilihitajika kusema ni nini waliyotaka kununua na kiasi cha pesa walitaka kutumia. Kwenye sokoni tuliona kwamba bidhaa zilikuwa kwa shilingi ishirini, shilingi hamsini, shilingi kumi, na shilingi tano. Tulitengeneza kadi za soko kama hizi. Hii ni kadi ya papai ya shilingi ishirini 20/-. Twaweza kuwa na kadi mbili zingine za papai ya shilingi hamsini ama papai ya shilingi kumi 10/-.

Kisha tunatumia tepe, kulaminate, na kama vile unavyoona siyo kazi ya pesa nyingi, na inazuia kuzorota. Kabla ya kwenda sokoni, kwanza wanafunzi na walimu walifanya igizo darasani.  Halafu wazazi waliwapa watoto shilingi ishirini ili waweze kununua papai, na shilingi hamsini kwa mchele.  Halafu watoto wakaenda sokoni.

Awali wanawake wa sokoni walisita kidogo kuona watoto wakinunua chakula sokoni. Baadaye tulisikia mwanamke moja akasema kwa lugha ya Twi, “Ikiwa wamarekani wanaweza kufanya kazi na watoto wetu, pia sisi tunaweza.

Sasa tukienda sokoni nao, wanawake wanawajua watoto kwa majina wao na watoto pia hawana hofu wanapoenda sokoni. Hiyo ni mfano wa mafanikio sana, na inaonyesha jinsi ya tunaweza kutumia mawasiliano kati ya watoto wenye mahitaji maalum.

Wanao elimu wa akili waweze kuwasiliana na jamii zao.
