After an early morning bus ride back from Kumasi to Accra full of Anasi stories and songs, we arrived at Korle Bu Hospital to witness a surgery and to participate in the cleft palate clinic.
Of the 12 repaired cleft palate patients we assessed, all either had perfect speech or were good candidates for speech therapy indicating, once again, the high quality of the cleft palate surgeries performed by the cleft palate team! Drs. Ampomah, Paintsill, and Laing listened carefully and asked a few probing questions such as ” what did you observe with this child’s uvula”. The TC students did a marvelous job in the assessment of current speech and stimulability and made professional, mostly jargon-free, natural-speech case presentations. Earlier that day I witnessed the final meeting to form the Smile Train-Korle Bu Cleft Team partnership! But then it was time to go to the airport and say our tearful goodbyes. TC Ghana 2016 Trip was another successful and joyful trip. Many thanks to all who made it so, especially to each and every student and supervisor, the exhaulted TA, and to dear George Odoi for performing his magic once again in getting my red bag to the airport.
