In this module, Cate focuses on making Sofie’s differential diagnosis to distinguish a disorder from a difference from an academic gap.

In this module, Cate focuses on making Sofie’s differential diagnosis to distinguish a disorder from a difference from an academic gap. She explains how Sofie’s rapid acquisition of all of the features of Standard American English and significant closing of gaps in vocabulary and semantic knowledge suggest that Sofie is experiencing academic gaps rather than a true disorder.

In this module, we also witness a follow-up interview with the parent, three months after the evaluation took place. Sofie and her mother spent the summer working to close academic gaps and Sofie has made tremendous progress.
